another one about biking, sort of!

So as some of you are aware, I have been taking frontrunner to work and riding my bike. Inevitably as one rides a bike to and from work on the streets, an accident involving a car is bound to happen. Well, that incident happened to me today. I was riding home from the train station along 1300 south and west temple, by Franklin Covey Field, and this black Mercedes decides to turn into the parking lot right in front of me, and as I was cruising along, a collision was unavoidable, so Kablamo! I hit the right front tire of the car as I tried to swerve and miss the guy, and the force knocked me off my bike, onto my back. I was lucky I was wearing a helmet cause my head hit the ground pretty hard as well. So the guy immediately gets out of his car and starts apologizing. I look over my bike and realize that the front tire is very wobbly. The rim is completely bent, and will need to be replaced. The kicker is, this guy doesn't have insurance. Who drives a late model Mercedes, and doesn't have insurance?! Anyway, the guy wanted to take care of it personally (no kidding! he doesn't have insurance!), but I just had a weird feeling, so I called the police anyway. So the cop comes and we do the paperwork thing. But the guy doesn't have insurance and it's going to cost me 300 dollars or so to replace the front wheel. I just have a feeling I will never get the money from this guy, lame! So if anyone wants to donate to the "help Brian get a new front wheel" fund, you are more than welcome to.

PS, I am ok, and don't have any broken bones or anything, and thanks to Cheryl who came and picked me up after the incident!

So what did the police officer say? Did you exchange info? Is he going to pay you? Can you press charges? Come on....I need details!

Well, I was riding on the sidewalk, since there was no shoulder, and that is illegal, although, anyone crossing a sidewalk into a parking lot has to yield to anyone and anything on the sidewalk, regardless. So if I wanted to have an official police report, I would have been cited as well, but he would still be held at fault. Anyway, we are going to try and resolve it civilly, since he doesn't have insurance anyway.

What do you mean it's illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk? Did I understand that right? I always thought vehicles had to yield to practically everything. I'm really glad to hear your okay, and I really sorry that I missed your face when you confronted him. I bet that was priceless!

yes, it's illegal, but I still had the right of way over the car.
